"We move as one"

Audrey "Coco" Beardsley has been swimming as long as she can remember. "I was always good at swimming; before I could walk I was swimming. Both my parents were swimmers, so l think it's in my blood," said Beardsley. For 14 years, Beardsley has not only remained consistent in performing synchronized swimming, but has also remained captain of her team. "Everyone I currently swim with I've been swimming with for eight to nine years. The coaches are like second parents to me. Beardsley believes that her sport has brought artistry back into her life, stating, "it's an outlet for me to be creative. It's a whole different world for me, with the dancing and music." She plans to go to college to major in political science, and expresses that, "synchronized swimming has been the platform for my leadership skills. It's helped me start my own club and be involved in school." When speaking on the traditions of her team, Beardsley describes how loss has changed her team's view and pre-competition rituals. "Before we go on, our team goes into a huddle, and we usually say a few words to motivate everyone. We had a girl on our team pass away, [Najla Brannin] and now we say before every performance that we swim for her. Our motivation comes from her spirit," said Beardsley.
